This THURSDAY (1/29/09) at 9:00AM PST, I will be testing our new multi-camera, multi-input live video streaming capabilities by offering 45 minutes of interactive podcast questions and answers to any participant joining us during this live session. This will be a first-in, first-served arrangement where I’ll do my best to answer as many of your podcasting questions as possible during our time together. I think it’ll be pretty cool.

The streaming video/audio quality was excellent. Next to the video, my browser kept showing:

I presume that there was a chat window next to the video stream?
I suspect that our corporate network firewall was blocking access to this port.
FYI: TCP port 6667, the chatroom port that ustream uses, is the same port that is used by another Internet chat program IRC (Internet Relay Chat). Unfortunately, IRC is now frequently used by computer hackers to remotely control people’s computers. That means that port 6667 is typically flagged as an untrustworthy port by corporate firewalls.
For maximal compatibility and interactivity with your guests, I recommend moving that chat port to something more “friendly” like port 80.
Thanks for figuring that out, Bill. I’m afraid that Ustream.tv does not allow somebody to change the chat port. . .not completely sure. . .but after some quick searching, I didn’t see a way to make that happen.
Perhaps, I’ll add Skype chat to the session as well.
